The general feed guidelines to Equsana feed are shown below and apply for ponies/horses in light-maintenance or moderate work and based on a daily ration of 1.3-2 kg roughage/100 kg. Thus, a 500 kg horse needs 6.5 -10 kg forage/day.
Supplement products*
- Pony 200 kg: 200-300 g/daily Horse 500 kg: 500-700 g/ daily
- Pony 350 kg: 300-500 g/daily Horse 600 kg: 700-900 g/daily
- Pony 450 kg: 400-500 g/daily Horse 700 kg: 800-1000 g/daily
* Note: it’s recommended to increase the daily dose of Fiber Lux ration slightly to as the above suggested feed rationing guidelines here.
Supplement products can be fed alone as long as the pony/horse maintains weight easily, are only trained lightly or have sufficient energy. It can otherwise be fed with energy sources, such as grain, oil or Health Fiber etc. Supplement feeds contain only a small amount of energy so the horse will not gain weight or become to over excited.
As a concentrate, you must feed the daily quantity recommended every day in order for he horse’s vitamin and mineral needs to be covered. If the horse needs to loose weight or gain weight, it is not the daily volume of supplement feed that needs to be adjusted but other energy sources, such as oats, oil or haylage etc.
Complete feeds
- Pony 200 kg: * Horse 500 kg: 2,2-2,6 kg/daily
- Pony 350 kg: 1,3-1,6 kg/daily Horse 600 kg: 2,5-3,5 kg/daily
- Pony 450 kg: 1,6-1,8 kg/daily Horse 700 kg: 3,0-4,0 kg/daily
* Hardy small ponies normally don’t need a complete feed.
Supplement products or concentrated vitamin blends are often recommended for easy keepers that need to trim down or maintain weight. If the horse is being fed below the stated minimum volumes for an extended period of time, its recommended to add extra vitamins and minerals to the feed.
A complete feed contains energy, proteins, vitamins and minerals and the daily volume can be adjusted according to the horse’s body condition and training intensity. A daily portion can be cut by half if the horse is on break or is having a day off. Increase the daily volume and/or add oil if the horse is in need of gaining weight.
